About Musica Viva

Musica Viva chamber orchestra is one of the most popular and loved orchestras of Moscow. 2011 saw the orchestra's 33rd Anniversary, and for the past two decades Musica Viva has been directed by Alexander Rudin, professor of the Moscow Conservatoire and a world renowned musician. Maestro Rudin works with striking intensity in very different musical spheres and combines roles of cellist, conductor and pianist, with those of researcher of early music and arranger of chamber orchestral works. In his work with Musica Viva, Alexander Rudin pursues discoveries and experiments along the pathway of pure academic tradition.

Musica Viva plays an enormous repertoire that includes music of widely varying genres and styles. One of the distinctive features of Musica Viva can be found in its striving to give historically informed performances of the music of different eras. The orchestra has undertaken a number of unique projects that particularly express this endeavor and these have become landmark events in the musical life of Russia. One particular direction taken by Musica Viva is that of concert performance of operas and oratorios with the participation of experienced singers and conductors from Europe – Handel’s operas “Orlando” and “Ariodante”, opera “Idomeneo” by Mozart, oratorio “Juditha Triumphans” by Vivaldi, masses by Haydn, oratorios “The Creation” and “The Seasons” and Requiems by Mozart and Schumann. Most of these pieces have never before been performed in Russia.

The orchestra’s Moscow Philharmonic Society subscription series “Masterpieces and Premieres” offers to its audiences programs of music that combine fresh interpretations of well-known classical works with music largely unfamiliar to the Russian public. An especially valuable feature of the series’ concerts has been the participation recognized experts in the performance of music from the Baroque, Classical and Romantic eras, many of them making their first appearances in Russia.
This season, Musica Viva Orchestra, in association with the Moscow Philharmonic Society, has inaugurated a new subscription series of chamber music programs. Entitled “Silver Classics,” the series is devoted to rarely performed works of the 18th century.

The geographical reach of Musica Viva’s touring activity extends both to Russia and to countries beyond its borders, including Germany, France, The Netherlands, Italy, Spain, the Czech Republic, Latvia, Slovenia, India, Turkey, Finland, Taiwan. During the current season, the most important foreign event for Musica Viva is participation in the large-scale international festival known as “La Folle Journée”, which will take it to France, Spain and Japan.
Musica Viva has made an extensive series of recordings, which include both well-known classics and works that have rarely or never before been recorded.
